I understand you’re getting your last rides of the year in. I understand (what you call) traffic sucks. I understand you have 10 internet studies showing how great lane splitting is. What I do not understand is how you think that the general population of SD will somehow be okay with it. Not only that, but I will remind you, while I’m busy ‘looking twice to safe a squids life’ you could just follow the law which states on Lane splitting:

No person may operate a motorcycle between adjacent lanes of traffic, or between adjacent lines or rows of vehicles. A violation of this section is a Class 2 misdemeanor. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! The operator of a motorcycle may not overtake and pass in the same lane occupied by the vehicle being overtaken. This section does not apply to motorcycles being operated two abreast in the same lane or a motorcycle and a bicycle being operated two abreast in the same lane. A violation of this section is a Class 2 misdemeanor. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

And yet you looked offended when that old guy opened the door of his car to block you and tore into you about getting yourself killed. Remember folks, he can barely keep that 1989 Ford LTD pointed inside that scary double turn lane, why you’d want to be on a bike between him and another death machine is beyond me.

Please, stay safe out there.

opening a door on a motorcyclist is a selfish, stupid and incredibly dangerous thing to do. Of course he was offended.

Same goes for people who brake check tailgaters.

Lane filtering is legal in my country because multiple studies back up the safety and benefits to the flow of traffic, when cars are stopped and the bike is going less than 30kph.. I still get fuckwits who’ll open their door and have a go at me.

Got lane-splitted upon for the first time in Colorado a couple weeks ago. Not even on a highway, but a 40 mph road. Guy splits his way through 3 sets of cars really fast at night on a huge chopper, not even a sport bike. Definitely wasn’t expecting it.

of course he would be offended. old guy or not, its not your job to police the roads. and then giving HIM a lecture on being safe? its like that mom that said: watch out for idiots! to her kid and then rear ended him 5 minutes later.

its the same thing with the fucker who served into someone last year. he is STILL sitting in jail waiting trial. and rightfully so.

you want to complain, do something about it, great. get the plate and call the cops. grab a video if you want. you have NO right to enforce the law. (by you I mean the old guy)

and on the topic of lane splitting, I admit I’ll do it if I’m caught in a thunderstorm and I’m just trying to get home. or stuck in a really bad traffic jam.

Wow, I almost forgot how other driver’s react to lane splitting now that I live in San Diego. I’m so use to driver’s here actually giving me room, I forgot how many times people tried to cut me off when I lived in other states.

And it’s not like Californians are big push overs when it comes to driving, they love battling against each other. But when it comes to bikes, they are just use to bikers splitting away and disappearing down the road.

Cali drivers are also probably afraid at the million attorneys per square miles here and getting sued for hitting a biker.

Good thing the CHP has been given control to regulate and create rules for lane splitting in the state. They have decades of data that show the advantages to lane splitting and are a big proponent of it.

I see lanesplitters almost daily on i25. it’s pretty wild. nobody here expects it, which means they arent watching for them. such a bad idea.

I would never lane split, but the only thing more assholish than lane splitting where it’s not allowed is purposefully opening your door in front of a motorcycle to somehow teach the rider a lesson. People who feel the need to enforce the law themselves are in the same category as squids. What an absolute moron.

Lanesplitting works in Europe, mostly because the majority of riders generally only do it when traffic is slowed or stopped (think bicyclists in traffic), and definitely improves safety there (I always leave a couple of car lengths between me and bikes when I’m stopped in bumper to bumper traffic because lane splitting isn’t permitted in North America). But my experience with splitting in California (where it’s quasi-legal) is that many riders there are not responsible enough for it to be legal. There’s no reason to split when traffic is moving well over the posted limit, or to drive 40-50+ miles an hour faster than other traffic. Splitting is to prevent rear-end collisions, not a license to pass illegally under any circumstance you feel is appropriate.

When I am sitting in traffic, I sooooooo want to split lanes. Never thought I would change from being against to for it but there is so much space!

You’re missing out. It is truly wonderful. There is plenty of space.

Did he have loud pipes “protecting” him?

The thing about exhaust pipes is that they generally point backwards! So I only heard him once he was basically already past us.

Yup... I’ve made the same point to the dumb loud-pipes-save-lives people.

Writing it down on a piece of paper to make it against the law doesn’t mean it’s better. Remember everyone don’t speed, not use the turn signal every time, wait 4 seconds at a stop sign, spin tires, etc

Lane splitting is fully legal in California

I guess they must have actually passed that bill. I thought it was pretty much neutered though? Legal subject to CHP guidelines which haven’t been written or something like that?

There really is. I’m not against it, but when the people in an area don’t expect it, they are more likely to do something dumb and hurt somebody. (thats why its a bad idea, its unexpected)
